@nationalblackmovieday and @wbd congratulate Cameron Blount and Bruce Bennett on winning the 2023 #ReelHBCU Challenge.

Cameron is a Freshman at North Carolina Central University majoring in Business Administration. Her goal is to become a C-Suite Executive in the film industry. Although she wants to greenlight stories that are reflective of the Black community, Cameron has a passion for filmmaking. Cameron says she chose Business Administration as her major because she wants to not just create stories, but understand the business of producing the stories and distributing them for the public. Her production company, Cameron Elyse Productions, has already completed three short films and one documentary.

Bruce is a Senior at the University of Maryland - Eastern Shore has become an accidental filmmaker. When asked how he developed a love for visual storytelling, Bruce said, "The boring answer is that it was an assignment for my field production class during my Sophomore year. The more fun answer is that I wanted to make something light hearted. I never made a film before this, so I figured my first should be something I have fond memories of creating." He's been producing films ever since. Bruce is pursuing his passion of professional filmmaking, and looks forward to producing more stories to make us laugh.

Both students submitted 10-minute short films for the contest. As winners, Cameron and Bruce will receive a $5000 scholarship to continue their film education and to pursue a career in the film industry.

This is #ReelHBCU support for the next generation of Black filmmakers.

National Black Movie Day is Saturday, February 18, 2023!

I am proud to partner with Warner Bros. Discovery for the observance and as a sponsor for our #ReelHBCU Challenge. I am also honored that Washington, DC Mayor Muriel Bowser has declared Saturday "Black Movie Day" in the nation’s capital. Thank you, Warner Bros. Discovery and Mayor Bowser.

Acknowledging Black stories and culture on screen and creating opportunities for the next generation of Black filmmakers are not options. Both are mandatory. Before we dissolve DEI efforts and reverse the strides made for our advancement in the film industry by dismissing and omitting "Black" from who we are as filmmakers and creatives, let’s make sure the playing field has been leveled and Generation Z has access to the opportunities and resources they deserve.
